Day By Day Itinerary
Day 1, Arrival
San Jose is perched at an elevation of 1150m, with the Poás, Barva, and Irazú volcanoes rising gracefully over the city to the north, and the rugged Talamanca mountains to the south. San Jose’s magnificent Teatro Nacional, outstanding museums, and beautiful plazas are within walking distance of one another.
Day 2
To Arenal
For four decades, Arenal was one of the world’s most active volcanoes, but it has been in a peaceful state of slumber since 2010, producing only the occasional plume of smoke. The perfectly conical volcano may be dormant, but it still provides a majestic backdrop for endless activities in the rugged and varied Arenal Volcano National Park. Hiking trails follow old lava flows, and sloths, coatis, monkeys and anteaters can be spotted on the way. There is horseback riding, biking and ziplining, as well as relaxing dips in volcano-heated hot springs.
Day 3
At Arenal
Thrilling adventure on the Sky Tram and Sky Trek. The Sky Tram consists of 6 gondolas with capacity for 6 people each. Reach the top of the Arenal reserve to the observation deck. Then, continue on a zip line consisting of 8 cross-sectional cables for a length of nearly 3 km. You will be able to observe the rainforest, the Arenal volcano (weather permitting) and the lake.
Day 4
To Monteverde
The marvelous, mist-shrouded Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve and the extensive network of nearby private reserves are rich and rewarding. Bird-watchers flock here to spot the myth-inspiring resplendent quetzal, and scientists come to study the bountiful biodiversity, including an estimated 2,500 species of plants (including 420 species of orchids), 490 species of butterflies, 400 species of birds, and 100 species of mammals, including capuchin monkeys, jaguars, and sloths. Monteverde has spectacular treetop walkways, exciting ziplines, and hilltop plantations that produce some of the world’s best coffee.
Day 5
At Monteverde
For those who love nature but leave extreme emotions for another time, this package includes: Hanging Bridges (Guide not included), Butterfly Garden, Sloth Sanctuary.
Day 6
To Tamarindo
The beach town of Tamarindo is not only a popular destination for surfers, but it also offers great diving, sportfishing, and some of the best restaurants on the Pacific coast. Tamarindo lies within Marino Las Baulas national park, one of the world’s most important nesting areas for leatherback turtles.
